Fátima, Ourém & Nazaré: People and Places

Begin in Fátima, not as a monument, but as a place that once lived quietly from land and shepherding. Learn why Fátima exists, the historical context of 1917, rural Portugal, and how three children from Valinhos and Aljustrel changed the destiny of a place forever. In Valinhos, away from crowds, the story becomes human. These paths were walked by the children long before pilgrims arrived. In Aljustrel, their homes reveal a life of simplicity, discipline, and faith, helping you understand the contrast between modest lives and global impact. From the plains, rise to Ourém, a medieval stronghold overlooking the region. Explore the strategic and symbolic role of fortresses in early Portugal and learn about the Battle of Ourique, a foundational moment in Portuguese identity, tied to divine vision, kingship, and independence. End your journey in Nazaré, a place where belief meets the Atlantic. Long before giant waves, Nazaré was shaped by legend and devotion, particularly the story of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, a miracle of salvation at the cliff edge. Hear about fishermen, matriarchal society, and survival, of a people who trusted faith and the sea equally. Standing above the ocean, the connection between Portugal’s inland devotion and coastal courage becomes clear.
